Portable Appliance Testing (PATs)
Inta Electrical Services has many years of experience behind it in the Portable Appliance Testing field. We have carried out the service across a wide range of business, retail, industrial and public sector environments on a nation-wide basis.

Based throughout mainland UK our team of fully trained operatives are able to implement both small and large-scale contracts.
We have the resources to recruit and train as and when required new operatives within a very short time scale. This puts Inta in the unique position of having the ability to respond to client orders and attend site to commence work usually within 10-15 working days of receipt of instruction.
All portable appliance testing carried out by Inta is in accordance with our Portable Appliance Testing procedures and specification and the IEE’s ‘Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (edition 3)’.
Table 7.1 of the IEE Codes of Practice outlines the frequency of testing for Portable Appliance Testing. However, this is deemed as purely a guideline and there are many influencing factors that need to be taken into consideration when setting out frequencies of testing to a client premises.
The industry standard has tended to be for Inspection to be carried out on an annual or bi-annual basis. Whereas this has always been the most popular choice for the majority of companies, it should be pointed out that not all equipment needs to be inspected as often. Decisions on the frequency of inspection are dependent on the following criteria:
1.2 The Users – If the users of equipment report damage as and when it becomes evident, hazards will be avoided. Consequently, if equipment is likely to receive unreported abuse, more frequent inspection and testing is required.
1.3 The Equipment Construction – Class 1 type earthed equipment will generally require more frequent testing than Class 2 equipment due to the exposed metalwork to the appliance giving rise to a greater risk of electric shock under fault conditions.
Whereas inspecting every appliance within a Client’s premises on an annual basis is considered as industry standard, and is a method adopted by many organizations, it is not always necessary to do so.
By taking into account both the information as detailed in table 7.1, and the above criteria, different types and class of electrical equipment would require inspecting at different intervals. These intervals can range from between 6 months and 24 month depending on its use and location.
An alternative, and more cost effective way of ensuring a Client’s premises is inspected and tested in accordance with the IEE Codes of Practice would be to carry out the inspections as part of a rolling maintenance regime. In doing this we can ensure that all electrical equipment within their premises is labelled, recorded, inspected and tested at intervals determined by the IEE Code of Practice.
Any such service could only be offered if a full inspection and testing regime had been carried out within the last 18 months, and the client was prepared to enter into a minimum 3 year contract. After each site visit, we would provide a schedule of items inspected and tested, along with a certificate covering all electrical appliances on site as being in compliance with the IEE Codes of Practice.
